It is a blessing to have the time and resources available to help the less fortunate among us. The Business Journal and the Calone Law Group, in partnership with the Community Foundation of San Joaquin, wish to issue a charitable challenge to our readers and we ask that you reach into your hearts (and your pockets) to help the charities which give so much to those in need in our community.
As the weather cools in the valley, I find myself in West Germany walking the streets just outside Frankfurt. It appears we brought the sunshine with us. I had an opportunity to accompany a friend from Stockton to visit her family in Germany so I jumped on it.
We certainly are enjoying some unusually warm weather for this time of year. I for one am thankful as we enjoyed yet another fun weekend at Lake Don Pedro, skiing, swimming and wakeboarding! If the Farmers Almanac is correct, we will have a warm fall this year, we are seeing an abundance of acorns on the ground and some say this means a hard winter is coming.
What strange weather we are experiencing in California, 105 degrees to 78 degrees in a nano- second. Jeez Louise! I guess when all is said and done, just about everything in our little world is a bit out of the norm. My sincere thanks to those that responded to my column last month, not to belabor the issue but, please note, that my column is just that, my opinion, you certainly don’t have to agree with me.
If you’re like me, you’re probably sick of hearing all the political nonsense about the illegal aliens and closing our borders.

Summer is my favorite time of year. We swim, ski, fish, go boating,
floating, play baseball, wake board, trap shoot, walk and all the fun
sun stuff.
I thought the warm weather would never arrive, but indeed it has.
Spring is a time of renewal and I’m happy to report that our very own Stockton Asparagus Festival has once again renewed our community’s charity coffers. What great weather we enjoyed for the 25th annual fundraiser! This type of an event is exactly what communities need to fund the non-profit organizations struggling in trying times. A BIG THANK YOU to all those that volunteered and continue to do so, year after year.
Congratulations to Pamela Eibeck, UOP’s 24th president. We haven’t seen a ceremony like this in 15 years, we wish you much success. See Page 30. Sarah Palin will serve as the guest of honor at the June 25th California State University, Stanislaus, 50th Anniversary gala. See Page 34.
Joseph F. Sheley has been named president of CSU Stanislaus, the university announced Wednesday. Sheley had served as interim president of the campus since June 2012. His appointment is effective immediately.
California’s unemployment rate dropped to 9.0 percent in April, according to data released today by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) from two separate surveys. That was down from 9.4 percent in March and 10.7 percent a year ago.
