Farm bill, environment to be discussed at fundraiser

Written by

MANTECA – The federal farm bill and good food for all are slated as the topics for the 2012-13 kickoff fundraiser for the League of Women Voters of San Joaquin County.

Kari Hamerschlag, senior food and agriculture analyst for the nonprofit advocacy group Environmental Working Group, will explain how federal policies support large-scale, chemical-intensive agriculture that harms the environment and makes farmers vulnerable to changing climate conditions.

Farmer Bob of Fresh Edible Farms in Lathrop will describe the local impact of farm policies on small scale local farming and community supported agriculture that can create a healthier, more resilient food system.

The public is welcome to the event 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at Delicato Winery, 12001 S. Highway 99 in Manteca. Locally-grown appetizers and wine will be offered as refreshment.

General admission is $30 and students will be $15. To make reservations and pay for tickets, write The League of Women Voters, P.O Box 4548, Stockton CA, 95204 by Sept. 7.
